As Women’s Day approaches in South Africa, we find ourselves reflecting on the significant strides we’ve made towards gender equality, a journey deeply rooted in the principles of our constitution which vehemently opposes discrimination based on gender. I’m Christelle Colman, CEO and founder of Ami Underwriting Managers, and this Women’s Day, I’m thrilled to share insights from my journey to inspire and empower women in both their personal and professional lives.
Financial Independence: Embracing Self-Reliance
Financial independence is a cornerstone of empowerment. “A man is not a plan,” a motto I often emphasize, underscores the importance of self-reliance. A pivotal moment in my life was when I decided to sell my luxury car to enhance my financial management. This decision allowed me to save significantly and invest in essential priorities, such as my children’s education. Mastering your finances, rather than being controlled by them, is a liberating experience that fosters long-term security and independence.
Health and Well-being: Prioritizing Self-Care
The saying “Your health is your wealth” resonates deeply with me. No matter how busy life gets, prioritizing physical health is crucial. I remember the days of rising early to exercise when my children were young, ensuring I met my health needs before the day’s responsibilities began. This commitment not only sets a positive example but enhances overall well-being, enabling us to tackle life’s challenges with vigor.
Networking and Support: Leveraging Collective Strength
My association with the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) has been incredibly valuable. Professional networks like the IISA provide support, education, and vital connections with peers who share similar challenges and goals. These networks are invaluable for building your professional brand and can significantly broaden both professional and personal horizons.
Authenticity in Leadership: Cultivating Trust
Authenticity in leadership is something I hold dear. “Being authentic in your leadership role builds trust and fosters a positive environment for all,” is a principle I advocate strongly. By being true to oneself and leading by example, we encourage a culture of collaboration and collective success, rather than individual competition.
A Call to Action: Honouring Our History
This Women’s Day, let’s honour the resilient women of 1956 who marched against oppressive laws. Their courage on the 9th of August, now celebrated as National Women’s Day, continues to inspire us to advocate for rights and equality. It’s a day that stands as a testament to the crucial role women have played in shaping our nation and emphasizes the ongoing pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Conclusion: Moving Forward Together
To every woman navigating the complexities of leadership and life: remember, you are not alone. This Women’s Day, let’s support each other, celebrate our achievements, and continue to strive for a more equitable future. As Malala Yousafzai reminds us, “We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back”. Let’s take inspiration from the trailblazers, the dreamers, and the change-makers who have paved the way before us. “Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on,” says Melinda Gates. Let’s reflect, inspire, and act to make a meaningful difference.
With gratitude and solidarity, Christelle Colman
