A Poignant Start to an Inspiring Career
On her very first day at work, 18 January 1993, Caroline Fick, Domestic Manager at Crawford Dougall, was eager and determined to make a good impression. Amid ringing phones and office bustle, Caroline unexpectedly found herself at the mercy of a mischievous toddler named Simon Dougall. Every time the office phone rang, Simon grabbed the handset and joyfully shouted, “Me Me Me!” Before long, an exasperated Andrew Dougall stormed out to find out why the phones were unanswered, only to discover his son Simon happily disrupting Caroline’s workflow. Little did Caroline know this playful toddler would grow up to become her friend, mentor, and boss—a charming symbol of the unexpected twists in her extraordinary career.
From Homemaking to Trailblazing
After dedicating 15 years to raising her three sons, Caroline’s re-entry into professional life began humbly as a receptionist and administrative assistant. Her innate determination and dedication quickly propelled her upward. Within just 18 months, she was entrusted with her own domestic insurance portfolio, which she steadily developed and nurtured over the years, growing it more than fiftyfold—a testament to her client focus, consistency, and tireless work ethic.
Reflecting on her path, Caroline notes with warmth, “I did not choose a career in insurance—it chose me.”
Navigating Challenges with Grace and Determination
Throughout her extensive career, Caroline has skilfully navigated countless challenges. One standout achievement occurred in 2019, when she crafted a specialized policy wording under Andrew Dougall’s mentorship, carefully integrating optimal coverages from multiple insurers—a task she regards with great pride.
For 28 years, Caroline worked closely with Andrew Dougall, who often handed her new leads with a simple yet empowering directive: “Do your magic.” Caroline thrived on the responsibility, frequently resolving complex claims with confidence and grace. “Teaching and guiding my colleagues has always given me profound satisfaction,” she shares, highlighting her passion for mentoring.
Over three decades, Caroline has developed and maintained deep relationships with an upscale, demanding clientele, expertly balancing their interests with insurer requirements. Reflecting on technological advancements, Caroline notes with amusement, “The days of memos and faxes seem almost unreal now.” A committed advocate for women’s empowerment, she strongly emphasizes ongoing training and recognition for women in the industry.
Caroline offers heartfelt advice to aspiring young women: “Love what you do, continuously expand your expertise, and always prioritize genuine interactions. That’s your foundation for lasting success.”
